Again, Just One More Time
Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn. - Harriet Beecher Stowe -
A key to any memoir is capturing the impactful events even if they seem quite trivial. When I was in college, a friend of mine had to drop-out after freshman year due to his fiscal situation. He signed up for the military and when we started the sophomore year, he started basic training.
After he finished basic training, he visited us at school to talk about his experience. He chose to sleep on the floor versus the bed when he stayed with me. All night, I asked him all sorts of questions about the army and basic training. I like to ask questions.
I asked him, what is the one most important thing you learned about yourself as you went through the training. What he said has stuck with me to this day. His response was that you can always do one more.
You can always do one more. It's a simple statement but a powerful concept.
From that day on when I felt like quitting (I don't quit), when I felt I didn't have it in me to continue, when I felt enough was enough, I think back to my friend reminding me that you can always do one more.
I use the statement when I talk to my kids about what separates being good from being great. You can be good. However, if you just push yourself a little more to do just one more, you can truly be great!
